Introduction
The decision to install EV charging infrastructure at a commercial premises or fleet depot is increasingly straightforward to justify. Fuel costs are rising, EV adoption is accelerating, and the business case for electrifying part or all of a vehicle fleet gets stronger with every fuel price increase.

What is less straightforward, and less often discussed, is what actually goes into a fast or high-power EV charger installation. The charger itself is only one component of a system that involves your existing electrical infrastructure, your grid connection, your future vehicle mix, and your operational requirements.

This article covers what decision-makers and facilities managers should understand before the specification process starts. It is focused on fast and high-power chargers, specifically the ABB Terra Fast Charger (50–180 kW) and the ABB Terra High Power Charger (175–350 kW), because these are the units relevant to commercial fleet electrification and high-throughput applications. They involve a meaningfully higher level of infrastructure planning than a standard workplace charger, and that planning is worth understanding before any procurement decision is made.

Power Output and What It Actually Means
Charger power output is measured in kilowatts (kW). The higher the output, the faster the charge, but also the greater the demand on your electrical infrastructure.

A 50kW fast charger draws roughly the equivalent of 50 single-bar electric heaters running simultaneously. A 180kW unit draws roughly three and a half times that. At the top of the range, a 350kW high power charger draws more power in an hour than many small commercial buildings use in a day.

This is not a reason to avoid high-power charging. It is a reason to plan for it properly. The infrastructure needs to match the output.

The charge time for a vehicle depends on two variables: the power output of the charger, and the maximum charge rate the vehicle’s onboard charger can accept. A charger rated at 180 kW will not charge a vehicle at 180 kW if the vehicle is only capable of accepting 50 kW. It will charge at 50 kW. Knowing the charge acceptance rates of the vehicles in your fleet is therefore important when specifying the right charger output.

Grid Connection and Available Capacity
Before any fast or high-power charger can be installed, the available capacity of your existing grid connection needs to be assessed.

Most commercial premises operate under a supply agreement with their electricity provider, which includes a maximum demand allocation that determines how much power can be drawn at any point. If your current allocation is fully utilised by existing operations, adding a high-power charger without upgrading your supply will result in tripping your main protection or exceeding your allocation. Both outcomes cause problems.

A grid capacity assessment, sometimes called a load flow study, determines what your connection can actually support and whether an upgrade is required. In some cases, the existing capacity is sufficient and no upgrade is needed. In others, an application to the municipality or electricity provider for additional capacity is required, which takes time and involves cost.

This assessment should happen before any procurement decision is made. Specifying a charger and then discovering the grid cannot support it is an expensive and time-consuming mistake to correct.

Three Phase Supply
Fast and high-power DC chargers require a three phase AC supply on the input side. If your premises currently operates on single phase supply only, a three-phase connection will need to be established before installation can proceed. This is a significant civil and electrical works item and needs to be factored into the project timeline and budget.

If your premises already has three phase supply, which most commercial and industrial sites do, the question becomes whether the available three phase capacity at the relevant distribution board is sufficient for the charger load.

Load Management
When multiple chargers are installed on the same site, or when EV charging is added to a site with significant existing electrical load, load management becomes an important consideration.

Dynamic load management is a system, either built into the chargers or managed by an external energy management controller, that monitors total site power consumption in real time and adjusts the power available to each charger to ensure total demand stays within the site’s grid capacity.

In practice, this means that during peak operational hours when the rest of the site is drawing heavily, the chargers may operate at reduced output. During off-peak periods such as overnight or on weekends, they can operate at full output. The vehicles still charge; the site does not exceed its grid allocation.

The ABB Terra Fast Charger and High Power Charger both support dynamic load management. For fleet operators planning to charge multiple vehicles simultaneously, this functionality is important to understand and to configure correctly at the time of installation.

Civil and Electrical Works
The charger is the visible end of an installation that involves significant work behind the scenes. Depending on the site, fast and high-power installations typically require the following:

A dedicated supply cable from the main distribution board or a sub-board to the charger location. At high power levels this cable is substantial, and the conductor size for a 180kW installation is considerably larger than standard commercial cabling. The run length also affects the cable specification.

Protection equipment at the distribution board, including circuit breakers, residual current devices, and surge protection rated to the charger’s input requirements.

Earthing that meets the charger’s specific requirements for both safety and correct operation. These requirements need to be verified and, if necessary, the existing earthing upgraded.

All of this work must be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the completed installation must comply with the relevant South African standards, including SANS 10142 and the applicable parts of the SANS 10400 series.

Future-Proofing — Planning for Growth
One of the most common mistakes in EV charging infrastructure planning is specifying only for today’s requirements.

If your fleet currently has two EVs and you are installing one charger, it is worth thinking about what the fleet looks like in three to five years. The civil works, including cable ducting, sub-board capacity, and earthing, can often be installed at the time of the first charger at relatively low additional cost, making the addition of further chargers in future significantly cheaper and faster.

Installing a sub-board with capacity for four chargers when only one is being connected today is a modest additional cost during the first installation. Retrofitting that capacity later, once the site is operational and the flooring or landscaping has been completed, is considerably more expensive and disruptive.

What to Ask Before You Commit
Before signing a purchase order or accepting a quotation for a fast or high-power EV charger installation, the following questions are worth asking.

Has a grid capacity assessment been done, and what does it show? Has the municipality or electricity provider been consulted if an upgrade is required, and what is the timeline? Is the electrical supply at the installation point three phase, and is the available capacity sufficient? Has load management been considered, and is it included in the specification? What civil and electrical works are included in the installation quote, and what is excluded? What is the manufacturer warranty on the charger, and who provides after-sales support locally?

These are not difficult questions. A competent supplier should be able to answer all of them. If they cannot, that is useful information before you commit.

Conclusion
A fast or high-power EV charger is a serious infrastructure investment. Done well, with proper planning and the right equipment, it supports fleet electrification for years and pays back the investment through reduced fuel costs and operational efficiency. Done without adequate planning, it creates technical problems, cost overruns, and delays that undermine the business case.

SSPD supplies the ABB Terra Fast Charger and High Power Charger in Southern Africa, and our team is available to discuss installation requirements, site assessments, and the right specification for your application. If you are in the planning stages, we would rather have the conversation early than after a specification has been locked in.

Nampo Harvest Day 2026 is done and dusted – and what a good four days it was.

From 12 to 15 May, the SSPD team was on the ground in Bothaville for one of Africa’s most significant agricultural expos, and it did not disappoint. The energy at Nampo is unlike any other event on the calendar. The scale of it, the diversity of the people walking the grounds, and the quality of the conversations that happen when industry professionals, farmers, and suppliers find themselves in the same place – it makes the preparation and the long days on your feet completely worthwhile.

What We Had on the Stand
This year’s stand gave visitors a broad look at what SSPD brings to the market. On display were the new Rehlko Phoenix Range generator, two Mecc Alte alternators, the Mecc Alte PTO unit, the Rehlko RESA generator, an ABB Terra Wallbox EV charger, a selection of Fiamm sealed lead-acid batteries, Donaldson filters, and a King Tony toolbox.

It was a good cross-section of our range – from power generation and alternator technology to EV charging infrastructure, batteries, filtration, and professional tools. Visitors could see, touch, and ask questions about the products rather than simply reading a brochure, which always leads to better conversations.

The PTO – A Product That Keeps Surprising People
If there was one product that generated the most curiosity and conversation on the stand this year, it was the Mecc Alte PTO alternator.

For those unfamiliar, a PTO – or Power Take-Off – alternator connects directly to a tractor’s PTO shaft, using the mechanical output of the tractor to generate electrical power. Single phase and three phase configurations are available, covering everything from workshop tools and lighting to irrigation pumps, grain dryers, and cold storage systems.

The concept is elegantly practical: if you are already running a tractor, you already have the prime mover. A Mecc Alte PTO alternator lets you put that power to work generating electricity, without the capital cost of a separate generator engine and without the ongoing cost of running and maintaining a second machine.

For the agricultural audience at Nampo – farmers, agri-businesses, and contractors who understand the value of making every piece of equipment earn its keep – this resonated. The conversations were detailed, the questions were specific, and the interest was genuine. It confirmed for us that the PTO category deserves more attention, and we are committed to putting it in front of the right audience going forward.

A Word of Thanks
Events like Nampo do not happen without a lot of people doing a lot of work – and we want to acknowledge that.

To the Grain SA team and everyone involved in organising Nampo Harvest Day 2026 – thank you. The logistics of running an event of this scale, year after year, to the standard that Nampo consistently delivers, is no small thing. We are grateful for the platform.

To our own team who manned the stand across all four days – thank you. Long days, a lot of conversations, and a lot of ground covered. The stand looked good, the products were well presented, and every visitor was looked after. We could not ask for more.

And to everyone who stopped by the SSPD stand – thank you. Whether you came to look at the generators, ask about the PTO, explore the EV charger, or simply have a conversation – your interest and engagement is exactly what makes Nampo worth being at. We hope we were able to add some value to your day.

We will be back in 2027 – and we are already planning to make the stand even better.

If any of the products you saw on the stand caught your attention and you would like to follow up, we would be glad to hear from you.

Every gate motor, access control system, alarm panel, and emergency lighting circuit has one thing in common: it relies on a battery to function. For security installers and companies specifying these systems, the battery is often the component that determines whether an installation performs reliably over the long term – or generates repeat service calls.

The Fiamm FG range of AGM VRLA batteries is designed specifically for these applications. Available in 7.2Ah, 9Ah, and 18Ah at 12V, the FG range delivers the kind of consistent, long-term performance that professional installers can stake their reputation on – backed by internationally recognised quality standards and a proven track record across the industry.

About Fiamm
Fiamm is an Italian manufacturer with over 75 years of experience in energy storage technology. The FG range is built around AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) VRLA (Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid) technology – a construction method that places the electrolyte in a fibreglass mat separator rather than as a free liquid, resulting in a battery that is non-spillable, maintenance-free, and fully recyclable.

Fiamm FG batteries are designed with unsurpassed proven reliability and are compliant with the highest recognised international standards. They are engineered to meet medium to long discharge rates and carry a design life of five years – a specification that sets them meaningfully apart from the cheaper alternatives that flood the market.

For installers, this matters. A battery that fails prematurely reflects on the installation, not the manufacturer. Specifying Fiamm gives you a product with the engineering credentials and quality consistency to support a professional installation over its intended service life.

AGM VRLA Technology – What It Means in Practice
Understanding why AGM VRLA technology is the right choice for gate, security, and access control applications comes down to three practical properties.

Non-spillable. Because the electrolyte is absorbed into the glass mat separator rather than sitting as a free liquid, Fiamm FG batteries can be installed in any orientation and inside enclosed enclosures without risk of acid leakage. This is a fundamental requirement for installation inside gate motor housings, alarm panels, and access control cabinets.

Maintenance-free. There is no water to top up, no electrolyte levels to check, and no periodic servicing required at the battery level. Once installed, the battery does its job without any intervention – an important consideration for installations across multiple sites where routine battery maintenance would be impractical.

Fully recyclable. Fiamm FG batteries are designed for full recyclability at end of life, which is increasingly relevant for installers and companies working with clients who have environmental compliance requirements. The valve-regulated design manages internal gas pressure through a small relief valve, allowing safe operation in enclosed spaces without venting harmful gases under normal operating conditions.

The FG Range: 7.2Ah, 9Ah, and 18Ah
The three capacities in the Fiamm FG range cover the full spectrum of gate motor, access control, alarm, and emergency lighting applications encountered in residential and light commercial installations. The right capacity for a given installation depends on the load requirements of the specific device and the required operating duration.

As a general principle, larger or heavier equipment draws more current and benefits from a higher-capacity battery. A standard residential gate motor on a short rail, for example, is typically well served by a 7.2Ah battery. A heavier sliding gate on a longer rail, a high-cycle commercial gate, or a system with additional peripherals drawing from the same battery may require the 9Ah or 18Ah to perform reliably over time. The same logic applies across alarm panels, access control systems, and emergency lighting circuits – a larger installation with more zones, more devices, or a longer required runtime warrants a larger capacity.

When specifying, always size the battery to the load with some margin. Consistently running a battery close to its full capacity under load accelerates wear and shortens service life. A correctly sized or slightly over-specified battery will outlast an undersized one significantly.

Applications

Gate and Garage Door Motors
Gate and garage door motors are the most common application for the Fiamm FG range in residential and light commercial installations. These motors require a battery that can handle the current demands of driving a motor under load, withstand the operating temperature range of an outdoor enclosure, and maintain performance over years of regular cycling.

The FG range’s five-year design life and AGM construction make it a strong specification choice over cheaper alternatives, which may offer an attractive upfront price but deliver significantly shorter service life and higher long-term replacement frequency. For installers managing multiple residential accounts, the difference in callback rates between a quality battery and a low-cost alternative becomes apparent quickly.

Burglar Alarm and Security Panels
Alarm panels and security systems rely on their internal battery to keep the system armed, the panel communicating, and the siren functional when mains power is interrupted. The Fiamm FG range’s compliance with recognised international standards and its medium to long discharge design make it well suited to the operating demands of residential and commercial alarm installations.

For security companies managing monitored installations across multiple sites, battery reliability is a direct operational concern. A battery failure at a monitored premises generates a fault, requires a technician visit, and in some cases creates a gap in coverage. Specifying a battery with Fiamm’s proven reliability record reduces this risk meaningfully compared to lower-grade alternatives.

Access Control Systems
Access control installations – covering electric strike locks, magnetic locks, biometric and proximity readers, intercoms, and electric gate keypads – place varied demands on the batteries that support them. The combination of continuous low-level draw from readers and periodic higher current demand when locks activate requires a battery with stable discharge characteristics across the range.

The Fiamm FG range’s design for medium to long discharge rates suits this mixed-load operating profile well. For commercial access control installations with multiple doors and devices, the 18Ah provides the capacity to maintain full system functionality through extended power interruptions, while the 7.2Ah and 9Ah cover lighter single- or dual-door setups.

Emergency Lighting
Emergency lighting systems in commercial buildings operate on the same always-on, mains-charged principle as alarm and access control batteries – maintaining a charged battery ready to power exit signage, stairwell lighting, and corridor lighting the moment mains power is lost. In South Africa, functional emergency lighting is a building compliance requirement for commercial premises, making battery specification and maintenance a regulatory matter as much as a practical one.

The Fiamm FG range’s five-year design life and AGM VRLA construction make it a sound specification for emergency lighting installations, where battery performance needs to be consistent and reliable from the first day of installation through to the next scheduled replacement.

Why Specification Matters: Fiamm vs Cheaper Alternatives
The battery market for gate motor and security applications is not short of low-cost options. For installers and security companies, the temptation to specify a cheaper battery to improve installation margins is understandable – but the real cost of a low-quality battery is rarely reflected in its price.

Cheaper batteries typically use lower-grade plate materials, less precise manufacturing tolerances, and may not meet the international standards that govern performance and safety in these applications. The practical result is a battery that may perform adequately in the first year but degrades faster, fails sooner, and generates more service calls over the life of the installation.

Fiamm FG batteries are designed with unsurpassed proven reliability and built to international quality standards. For a security installer or company whose reputation depends on installations that work when they’re supposed to, the difference between a Fiamm FG and a commodity alternative is not just a specification detail – it’s the difference between a satisfied client and a service call at the wrong time.

A Practical Note on Capacity and Replacement
Battery service life in gate motor and security applications is influenced by operating conditions. High ambient temperatures – common in South African summers, particularly in enclosures exposed to direct sunlight – accelerate battery ageing. Systems in these conditions may require earlier replacement than the five-year design life suggests. Equally, installations in consistently moderate temperatures with lower cycling demands may achieve or exceed the design life.

For installers servicing multiple sites, maintaining stock across all three FG capacities – 7.2Ah, 9Ah, and 18Ah – means a service call for any standard residential or light commercial application can be resolved in a single visit without waiting on a parts order.

SSPD supplies the Fiamm FG range to trade and retail customers. For pricing, availability, and advice on capacity selection for a specific application, get in touch with the team directly.

In mining operations, power continuity is not only about productivity. It is about safety, ventilation integrity, dewatering capability, communication systems, and control stability.

A power interruption underground or on a remote surface operation does not simply stop production. It can compromise critical safety infrastructure, and put lives at risk.

For this reason, backup power in mining must be treated as a safety system, engineered with redundancy, voltage stability, and lifecycle reliability in mind.

Redundancy Planning Is a Safety Strategy
Mining environments operate under high-load, high-risk conditions. Single-point failure design is not acceptable where ventilation systems, pumping stations, and safety monitoring equipment are concerned.

Redundancy planning includes:

N+1 generator configurations

Parallel generator systems

Load segmentation for essential vs non-essential circuits

Independent excitation systems for improved voltage stability

Programmable logic for solutions that can offer no breaks in power

Generator systems such as those from Rehlko are commonly specified in mining applications because of their suitability for prime and heavy-duty standby environments.

Correct redundancy planning ensures that critical systems remain operational even during component failure or maintenance intervals.

Stable Voltage Protects Control and Monitoring Systems
Modern mining sites rely heavily on:

PLC-controlled systems

Monitoring and safety sensors

Communication infrastructure

Automated load management

Voltage instability can damage control boards, disrupt automation systems, and create operational risk.

Alternators from Mecc Alte equipped with PMG (Permanent Magnet Generator) systems provide independent excitation to the AVR. This improves:

Voltage stability during sudden load steps

Performance under non-linear load conditions

Short-circuit capability

Resilience during motor starts

In safety-critical mining environments, excitation stability is not optional. It protects the integrity of control infrastructure.

Emergency Start Reliability Begins With the Battery System
Backup power must respond immediately when grid failure or upstream supply interruption occurs. Starting failure during an emergency event introduces unnecessary risk.

Industrial battery systems such as those supplied by Fiamm support reliable cranking performance in demanding environments. Fire-retardant casing and durable construction improve safety in confined generator rooms and enclosed installations.

Battery condition monitoring, correct sizing, and maintenance planning are fundamental components of mining power reliability.

Dust, Contamination, and Filtration in Harsh Environments
Mining environments introduce severe airborne contamination. Fine dust particles accelerate wear on engines, injectors, and lubrication systems.

Inadequate filtration directly affects:

Engine longevity

Fuel system performance

Lubrication integrity

Maintenance intervals

Filtration solutions from Donaldson, including air, oil, and lube filters, play a critical role in protecting generator systems operating in harsh mining conditions.

Effective filtration is not an accessory component. It is part of the overall safety and reliability strategy.

Integration Planning Determines System Performance
Backup power systems do not operate in isolation. They must integrate with:

Site distribution boards

Load prioritisation systems

Ventilation infrastructure

Dewatering systems

Control and monitoring equipment

Integration planning must address:

Load sequencing

Harmonic distortion

Motor starting current

Enclosure protection ratings

Environmental conditions

Proper specification of generator capacity, alternator configuration, battery systems, and filtration ensures that the backup system performs under real mining conditions – not just on paper.

Safety, Continuity, and Engineering Discipline
In mining, backup power is not simply a compliance requirement. It is a safeguard against operational and safety risk.

Resilient mining power systems require:

Engineered redundancy

Stable voltage control

Immediate start capability

Dust-resilient filtration

Lifecycle support and genuine spares

Treating backup generation as a safety system ensures operational continuity while protecting personnel, infrastructure, and production capability.

For mining applications requiring engineered power solutions, engage with our technical team to assess system configuration, redundancy planning, and long-term support strategy.

Diesel Generators
– Filters (oil, air, fuel, water)
– Belts, hoses, clamps
– Cooling system components
– Sensors, switches, and electrical parts
– Engine service parts
– Engine repair parts

Diesel systems often operate in demanding environments, making preventative maintenance essential. Keeping these components readily available ensures that clients can maintain optimal performance and avoid unplanned downtime.

Gas Generators
– Spark plugs and ignition components
– Regulators and gas-train spares
– Sensors, solenoids, and control components
– Cooling and lubrication consumables

Gas power applications require consistent tuning and periodic replacement of wear components. Stocking these parts avoids long lead times and keeps units running efficiently and safely.

Industrial Power Equipment
– Alternator parts (AVRs, diodes, bearings)
– Control panel spares
– Breakers, contactors, relays
– Battery chargers and block heaters
– Ancillary installation components

Industrial systems often support mission-critical operations in manufacturing, data centres, hospitals, mining operations, and utilities. Our focus is on stocking reliable, OEM-approved components that maintain system integrity and support compliance standards.

Why We Stock What We Stock
Our spares strategy is shaped by three core priorities:

Reliability
We carry OEM and OEM-approved components to ensure long-term performance. Quality spares protect your equipment investment and reduce the risk of premature component failure.

Fast Availability
Power interruptions cost time and money. Our local stockholding reduces lead times and helps operators respond quickly to maintenance requirements, site conditions, and emergency situations.

Industry-Specific Needs
Every industry has its own operational demands. Our stock is kept up to date through close collaboration with customers, service teams, and distributors – ensuring the right components are available for the right applications.

Supporting You with Expertise
Beyond inventory, our Spares Department offers expert support to help customers identify the correct components, plan maintenance schedules, and reduce the risk of downtime. Whether you operate Diesel, Gas, or Industrial power systems, our team is equipped to assist with the right parts and the right advice.

Generators are built to be tough – but like any hardworking machine, they need regular care to keep running efficiently and reliably. Whether you’re using your generator for prime power or backup support, knowing when to service it can save you from unexpected failures and costly downtime. Here’s a simple guide to help you stay on top of your generator’s service schedule:

1. After a Set Number of Running Hours
Most generator manufacturers recommend a basic service every 250 to 500 hours of operation. For heavy-use or prime power generators, this interval may be shorter. These services typically include:

Oil and filter changes

Fuel system checks

Air filter replacements

General inspection of belts, hoses, and cooling systems

Tip: Use a log book, or your generator’s controller or hour meter to track run-time accurately.

2. At Regular Time Intervals (Even If Not in Use)
Even if your generator isn’t used frequently, it still requires servicing every 6 to 12 months. Why? Because oil degrades, batteries discharge, and seals and hoses can deteriorate with time.

These preventative checks help ensure the unit is ready when you need it most, especially in critical applications like hospitals, businesses, or rural power setups.

3. After Heavy Load Events or Power Outages
Extended use during outages puts extra strain on your generator. At Sub Sahara Power Distributors, we understand the vital role PTOs play in powering agricultural machinery and boosting farm productivity. Here’s a closer look at how PTOs can transform your operations.

What is a PTO?

A Power Take-Off (PTO) is a mechanical device that transfers power from a tractor or engine to an attached implement or machine. This external power source allows farmers to operate a wide variety of equipment without needing dedicated engines for each piece of machinery. PTOs are widely used to power everything from mowers and balers to augers, sprayers and other important agricultural tools.

Key Agricultural Applications for PTOs

1) Mowing: PTOs power large-scale mowers, allowing farmers to efficiently cut and manage crops or prepare fields for planting. With a PTO, you can easily manage vast fields with speed, saving time and reducing costs.
2) Irrigation Pumps: Water management is a significant concern in agriculture, and PTO-driven pumps play a crucial role in ensuring crops receive the right amount of water. By connecting a PTO to an irrigation pump, farmers can move large volumes of water quickly and effectively, ensuring their fields stay hydrated.
3) Sprayers and Spreaders: Whether applying fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, sprayers and spreaders are essential in crop management. PTOs enable precision spraying and spreading by delivering consistent power to these machines, which helps farmers distribute inputs evenly across their fields for better crop yields.

What Are the Benefits of Using PTOs in Agriculture?

Increased Efficiency: PTOs streamline the use of multiple pieces of equipment, helping you complete tasks faster and more efficiently. One tractor can power a variety of tools, reducing the need for additional machinery.
Cost Savings: Since PTOs eliminate the need for individual engines on every piece of equipment, maintenance costs and fuel consumption are significantly reduced. This translates into long-term savings for farmers.
Versatility: PTOs allow for flexibility in operations. Whether you’re harvesting, irrigating, or managing livestock, a PTO-equipped tractor can serve many functions with minimal downtime.
Reliability: Modern PTOs are designed to withstand the rigors of daily farm work. With the right maintenance, they provide reliable power transfer to ensure that your farming operations run smoothly.

Choosing the Right PTO for Your Needs

Selecting the appropriate PTO for your equipment is critical to achieving maximum performance.
